Spring Term

Each patrol selected an interest badge to work on together between Christmas & Easter. The Eiffel Tower & Sphinx patrols found out about the history of chocolate as well investigating the differences between Fair Trade & ordinary chocolate bars while working on the Chocolate interest badge. The Starfish patrol created playlists & discussed their tastes in music & made a campfire song book while working on their Music Zone interest badge. The Daisy patrol made mosaics & friendship jewellery as well as trying their hands at tie-dying & dough craft to gain their Craft interest badge.

On 8th March ... we attended a district event at Cregagh Presbyterian which took the form of a 'Make & Take' evening. We got to try four different crafts ... making candle decorations, dough craft, party bags & handmade paper.

We are continuing with activities from the Right Now! program this term, this time looking at the 'Right To Be Happy'. We have made our own Happy Books which we have filled with all the things that make us happy.

Autumn / Winter Terms

We have been very creative this year with recent activities including a visit to Paint Me Glaze Me. There we used our artistic talents to decorate mugs, plates & novelty items.

We also worked on the Guide Association's RIGHT NOW activities which allowed us to find out about our rights & responsibilites as well as discussing our views & opinions on the topics involved. This term we concentrated on the 'Right To Be Me' ... which included various activities such as Focus On Fashion & Face Value. It gave us lots to think about concerning how we perceive people just by looking at them.

Salt Dough Recipe

Ingredients
2 cups plain flour
1 cup salt
1 cup water
(optional ... add few drops of food colouring to water)

Method
Mix the flour and salt together in a bowl & gradually stir in the water mixing to a soft dough.
It should be neither too sticky (add more flour) nor too dry (add more water).
Remove from the bowl, place on a flat surface and knead for 10 minutes to create a smooth texture.
Leave to stand for 20 minutes before using. Unused dough can be stored in the fridge in an airtight
container or cling flim for up to a week.

Drying
This can be done naturally in the air or baked in an oven.
Do not cook at more than 100C (200F / Gas 4) as it will cause unsightly bubbles & cracking.
Cook at 50C for 30 minutes then raise temperature to 100C.

The drying time varies depending on the size and thicknes of your project.
An average drying time for natural drying is 30-48 hours whilst oven times are generally 3-4 hours.
When your model is dry, turn off the oven and leave it inside to cool down.
You can paint your finished project if desired.
Varnish to protect from moisture.
