Belfast County Camp Challenge 2008

BELFAST COUNTY CAMP CHALLENGE 2008 ... takes place on the Gibson Site at Lorne on 10th & 11th May 2008. Lorne is located 8 miles from Belfast City Centre on the A2 Belfast to Bangor road in the Borough of North Down.

HISTORY ... The inaugural Belfast County Camp Challenge took place in 2007 and was a great success.

AIM ... to provide opportunities for girl guides to both learn and improve their camping skill. This is an ideal environment for girls to try something new.

THEME ... The Olympics 2008. Each patrol has discovered a new land and we want them to name it and design a flag for this new country. Bring this flag with you as it is to be displayed outside the tent as the tent emblem.

CAMPING CHALLENGES ... Teamwork is one of the most important skills. Guides will be judged and marked within 2 categories, Novice & Experienced, on the challenges listed below.

WHAT TO BRING? ... Patrol Equipment List & Kit List

MOST IMPORTANT! ... to have fun and really enjoy the short weekend as well as learning camping skills.

WHAT WILL WE BE DOING? ... Time-table

Camping Challenges

1. Tents - Putting up and taking down their tents.

Marks will be deducted for help and assistance given.

Inspection will cover areas such as ... straight, pegged correctly, guys correct & tensioned, inner correctly attached & pegged and tent, pole and peg bags stored correctly.

2. Sewing

Girls will receive camp scarves and badges to sew onto their scarves in an allotted time. Each patrol should bring a sewing kit with a needle for every girl and blue thread.

3. Gadget Making

Novices will be required to make a basin holder with drainer. Experienced guides a table. Both will be for use over the weekend. Patrols need to bring enough wood and material to construct their gadgets. All gadgets are to be built on site within a timetable. Click for knots & lashing and suggested gadget designs. Girls are free to use their own design.

Marks will be given for knots used, sturdiness, design and teamwork. Extra points will be awarded for any extra gadgets. NO gadgets can be brought ready made.

4. Costume Challenge

The girls will be asked to dress one patrol member up in the National Costume of their new Country to parade in the opening Olympic Ceremony. No preparation needed and materials will be given out for this. The patrol can bring a maximum of 4 extra items for decoration.

5. Cooking

The camp QM will be responsible for the purchase and storage of food and for the allocation to patrols for cooking. The QM will cook for Guiders. General safety and hygiene are paramount and we also want the girls to eat well.

Marks will be given for both meals, to include preparation, lighting up, meal quality, clearing up, Health & Safety and teamwork.

The girls will be cooking two meals in their patrols the Saturday evening meal and their Sunday breakfast. One if these meals will be on an open fire and the other will be on a trangia. When using the trangias there will be one for every two girls and so more utensils will be required.
